How Can Tracking Your Activity Help With Your Fitness Goals?

It’s all too easy to set fitness goals but it is not so simple to keep track, stay focused and see how well you are doing with smashing those goals with the ultra busy lifestyles that we all lead today! Living a well balanced life means that we work hard to prioritise activity and work outs along with time for rest, relaxation and ideally a breathing or meditation practice.

We all know that sleep is incredibly important! The new generation of fitness trackers often track sleep stages as well. The amount of time slept is not always a good indicator of a great night’s sleep – it’s that REM sleep that we all need to get more of! Good sleep goes a long way in helping to support emotional well being and mental health, particularly so for women who often need a little bit more sleep than men.

The new wave of trackers also track heart rate – often with 24/7 monitoring. Once your tracker knows your baseline heart rate it can notify you of an abnormal result which can enable you to keep on top of your heart health. As we all know heart health is hugely important! Ensuring that your heart rate stays within the healthy range can go a long way to reducing your risk of strokes, heart disease and heart attacks. The healthy resting heart rate range for adults is between 60-100 beats per minute at rest. However if you are quite athletic your resting heart rate can often be lower than 60 beats per minute. Through the Samsung Health app you can also easily measure your heart rate via. your phone.

They have made alot of updates to the Samsung Health app and it’s looking pretty good! I am interested to see how it compares to the new Google Fit app so I might look at that over the next few months. You can easily turn your phone into a health and activity tracker by simply using an app and wearing it throughout the day. There are so many fitness tracking apps now on the market! If you don’t want to have to wear your phone purchasing a dedicated fitness tracker is also another great option. See our picks below:

1. Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch:

This is the long time coming Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch. It comes in three colourways, rose gold as pictured, all black and then black and silver. Much like the Apple Watch you can order a variety of custom bands and jewellery that is compatible. It works via. bluetooth and has wireless charging capabilities which enable it to run for days without you having to charge it. It pairs with Samsung and iOS devices quickly and easily via. bluetooth. They designed it to look like a non-digital, classic watch and it does look great although I find the screenface a little busy. Like the apple watch you can make and recieve calls, check emails, play music, and use voice command. It is also designed to sync with the Samsung Health app, where you can set health goals, track your exercise, calories, sleep, weight, heart rate, stress levels, and even how many glasses of water you drink comfortably through the app. The app will also send you notifications and reminders throughout the day so that you can stay up to date and on top of your goals. They now also have programmes, meditation sessions and even sleep stories! If you use android it is also much cheaper than the apple watch and still has great functionally, excellent reviews and great connectivity with your Samsung or iOS device. (Amazon) Please note: This is the international version which is without the one year warranty and Samsung pay. You can order the US version here. (Amazon)

2. Misfit Path Hybrid Smartwatch:

Misfit is a smartwatch and wearable technology brand. Current trends seem to be moving away from wearable jewellery and back into smartwatches with loads of functionality. Misfit’s new watch range look amazing and they also have great designs for men. The Misfit Path is a lighter, more delicate watch perfect for Women. They also have a ‘design your own’ option where you can customise the watch face, surround and strap. Along with leather they also have a range of non-leather options in different colourways (perfect for vegans!). The watch tracks steps, distance, calories and can also track swimming! Many activity trackers do not have the ability to track swimming but the Misfit Path is actually swimproof up until 50 metres and also tracks swimming through the Speedo upgrade within the Misfit app – which is pretty cool. Smart buttons enable you to take a picture, play music or even find your phone! It is also designed to work with wear OS by Google so you can use it with the new Google Fit app if you prefer. 3. Bellabeat Leaf Urban Chakra (Rose Quartz):

The Bellabeat Leaf Chakra activity tracker is the latest offering from Bellabeat and it is designed with real rose quartz to help bring more love and calming energy to your meditation practice. Along with offering great meditation programmes within their app the Bellabeat Chakra also tracks steps, distance moved, calories, sleep, reproductive health (with a built in period tracker), and stress. With the Bellabeat Chakra you also don’t have to worry about any charging or bluetooth issues as it operates via. battery and stays functional for around six months (you will just need to make sure you recycle the battery in the appropriate way when you are done!). It is also very versatile and able to be worn as a bracelet, necklace or simply clipped on to clothing! (Amazon)

4. Bellabeat Leaf Urban:

Bellabeat Leaf Urban has all of the same functionality as their earlier designs they just have now included a ‘stone look’ composite into the design and it also comes in trendy rose gold.  The Bellabeat Leaf health tracker is simply beautiful and tracks steps, distance moved and total calories burned. The tracker is also designed to track your sleep, the amount of time slept and quality along with giving you a gentle alarm when it is time to wake up! The app is also designed with guided meditations to help you to create calm. Women can think and feel differently during their menstrual cycle. Leaf tracks your periods so that you can adjust your activity levels if necessary during this time and create more awareness around your reproductive health (they are also currently working on menopause tracking within their next app update). Through monitoring sleep, activity, meditation and women’s cycles the Bellabeat leaf aims to reduce and prevent stress. It also provides you with feedback and motivation to help take care of your wellness. The great thing about all Bellabeat products is that they are fully compatible with Android and iOS and can easily be synced with Samsung Health or Google Fit so there is no excuse to get on board! If your stress levels are getting too high the Garmin will send you a reminder to take a break and perhaps engage in some deep breathing exercises. The Garmin Vivomove also tracks steps, calories, distance travelled, and exercise intensity. This smartwatch also has the cabability to determine your ‘fitness age’ so with some hard work you can lower your age over time as you increase your fitness levels! 6. Fitbit Charge 3:

Want an activity tracker that will track all of your sleep cycles? The Fitbit Charge 3 will track light, deep and REM sleep plus it has the ability to analyse all of your data and send you personalised insights and guidance. Other than just counting steps like many health trackers, the Fitbit Charge 3 actually has fifteen different exercise modes including running, cycling, yoga, swimming and more! The Charge 3 is also water resistant up until 50 meters so you can wear this to track your swims and you don’t need to worry about taking it off when you have a shower. The charge 3 also has 24/7 heart rate tracking – some of the reviews are upset about how the default screen now shows your heart rate instead of the date. I think Fitbit are still working on this product and later releases have hopefully improved the customisability options. Another cool feature that the Fitbit Charge 3 has is the ability to connect to your phones GPS for more accurate tracking while hiking etc. The Fitbit app also has the ability to track women’s reproductive health along with connecting you to other friends using a Fitbit so that you can help to keep each other motivated! (Amazon)

7. Fitbit Inspire HR:

The Fitbit Inspire HR has alot of the same functionality as the Fitbit Charge 3 however it is a tad smaller and lighter. The Fitbit Charge 3 also has an aluminium body which looks great in proffessional settings where as the Fitbit Inspire is definately more sporty looking. It is also quite a bit cheaper and simpler than the Charge 3 however it still has 24/7 heart rate tracking which seems to be built in to all of their latest models. You can also purchase an additional accessory which will enable you to easily clip your Fitbit Inspire on to your clothing for those who prefer to sometimes wear their activity tracker! For the price you can also do alot with this like see how many calories you have burned, get sleep tips and reminders to move plus much more! (Amazon)

8. Fitbit Versa:

Fitbit Versa is the latest smartwatch from Fitbit and it is simply beautiful! I think they have done a great job with the design. I also really love the special edition models with the soft band as I think it would also look great worn in a professional setting. This watch can do alot! Store up to 300 songs to help motivate your work outs, track activity, sleep stages, or even make payments. It will also give you smartphone notifications plus you can even send a text reply if your phone is an android. The watch also goes for four days without you having to charge it. You can also download a range of apps that are compatible like uber, news and sports. Plus track reproductive health and even get workout coaching and reminders via. the Fitbit app. (Amazon)

9. Apple Watch Series 4:

If you are commited to Apple products the Apple Watch series 4 is the ultimate must-have to keep track of everything throughout the day! It also has excellent reviews. Unfortunately it does not track sleep (for now) but it will give 24/7 heart rate monitoring plus the ability to take an ECG via. your finger to determine your heart health and total body wellness – which is revoluntionary! The watch also has built in GPS tracking, has a larger screenface than their earlier models, offers a louder speaker for music playback via. Apple music, and it is also swimproof and extremely hardwearing. Another great feature within the  Apple Watch is that it has a fall detection where you can call for help if you need it. It can also detect your workouts, is super smart and you can even use Siri voice command to do a range of different exciting things without even having to pick up your phone. (Amazon) NZ based?
