Exfoliating DIY Face Mask For Super Sensitive Skin!

This facemask is based on the recent DIY facemask that Dara Dubinet posted on her YouTube channel by celebrity esthetician Robin McDonald (facemask starts at 8.10). Robin is also the creator of KINDri – a natural skincare range that is also vegan and cruelty-free! Robin created her natural skincare range after seeing client after client with damaged, photosensitized skin from the overuse of topical exfoliants. She realised the importance of being kind to your skin as it ages and nourishing it with natural oils. Robin uses African shea butter, certified organic oils, botanicals and her secret ingredient for fortifying and illuminating skin – cactus oil from the prickly pear seed!

– GENTLE EXFOLIATING DIY FACEMASK –

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 Cup fresh pineapple

1 Apple

1 Lemon zest (the white part of the lemon directly underneath its skin)

1/2 Banana

2 tbsp. couscous

1/2 tsp. organic oil (they used prickly pear seed oil but you can also substitute with another oil like coconut, rosehip, jojoba or argan are all good oils for ageing skin) You can use more or less oil depending on the dryness of your skin.

METHOD:

1. Blend all of these ingredients together in the blender. You should still be able to feel couscous granules in the mask when you are done! The couscous is going to act like an exfoliant. The final result should have a sticky consistency.

2. Spread onto your face and neck and gently rub it around and exfoliate the skin. When you have finished exfoliating leave the mask on for 15 minutes until set then wash it off gently.

PINEAPPLE:
Contains the enzyme bromelain which is highly anti-inflammatory! Robin says that it will help to naturally break down and dissolve oils and dead skin cells to reveal new, fresh skin. Pineapple is also very high in vitamin C and antioxidants which help to prevent and treat acne, fine lines, sun damage and uneven skin tone and texture. Bromelain also helps to soften skin texture and keep your skin younger looking.

APPLE:
Apple is full of malic acid and skin-friendly nutrients like vitamin C and copper. Malic acid helps to balance the pH levels of our skin and works to increase moisture retention. Malic acid can also help to reduce pesky skin issues like premature ageing, pigmentation, acne and dryness.

BANANA:
Banana is moisture rich and is high in potassium, and vitamins C and E. These properties all work to create beautiful glowing skin. It can be used for dry ageing skin and acne prone skin alike. It also contains B-vitamins, Vitamin A and Amino acids which help to repair free radical damage and premature ageing!

LEMON ZEST:
Lemon zest is high in vitamin C and is a great natural exfoliant and astringent! It contains citric and plant acids that can help to naturally cleanse, brighten and lighten the skin without using harsh chemicals. The natural acids also gently remove dead skin and stimulate the growth of fresh new skin.

COUSCOUS:
Couscous is a wonderful exfoliant in DIY beauty masks because of its cylindrical nature which means that it will not have any sharp edges that can damage this skin. Some natural products that have natural exfoliants can actually cause small tears in the surface of your skin which can let bacteria enter your skin. It is best to always stick to gentle exfoliants. Conventional products that contain microbeads to exfoliate your skin are causing a lot of problems in our waterways! It is best to stop supporting companies that are still putting microbeads into their products. It is so easy to make your own scrubs/exfoliators! Check out this great vid. on microbeads from The Story of Stuff.

PRICKLY PEAR SEED OIL:
Prickly pear seed oil is high in vitamin K (also known as linolic acid). This essential fatty acid is said to have a long list of benefits to the skin including helping to repair and prevent the signs of ageing. It also helps to prevent dark circles and increases skin elasticity! Prickly pear seed oil is high in essential fatty acids 6 & 9 and Vitamin E which is also great for overall skin care. The amino acids it contains help to stimulate collagen production and increase cell turnover. It also helps to strengthen and protect the skin from free-radical damage. You might have heard of argan oil recently! Prickly pear oil contains 150% of the amount of vitamin E that is in argan oil and is also more sustainable. Definitely, one to try for younger looking, glowing skin! ♥
